What a cookie is
A small text file a site leaves on your device so it can recognise you next time. That is the whole mechanism. What matters is what each one is used for, which is what the rest of this page is about.
The ones we set

Every one of these is necessary for the site to work or to remember a choice you made. There are no advertising cookies and no cross-site trackers.
Why they exist at all
- To keep you signed in without asking for a password on every page
- To remember display preferences you set yourself
- To block a class of attack that would otherwise work against every form on the site
- To let staff reach the site while it is in maintenance mode
Third parties
We do not embed advertising or analytics services, so nothing on the site sets a cookie on someone else's behalf. Stripe sets its own cookies during checkout, which are governed by Stripe's policy and only appear if you start a payment.
Turning them off
Your browser controls all of this. Most of them let you:
- Inspect and delete stored cookies one at a time
- Block third-party cookies
- Block cookies from a specific site
- Clear everything on close
Blocking ours means you cannot stay signed in, and forms will be rejected. Browsing public pages still works.
Changes
If the list above changes, this page changes with it and the date at the top moves.
